SMELL
PVC
2022

Jack Murphy and Gillian Casey head out for the day in the harbour town of Cork city. At age twenty six, they both have moved home with their parents due to the rapid rise in inflation, the cost of living, and the renting crisis in Ireland. With restrictions still in place, the pair look for activities to do together which proves difficult. Tensions rise between them as the stagnancy of their lives, and by default, their relationship, becomes harder to ignore.
Through the lenses of romanticism and mistakism, this short ignites an atmosphere of nostalgia, reminiscent of the 90s. The hyper-accentuated colorised style echoes the over romanticised way Cork is viewed. The grime that is magnified in the filmic style illuminates the cities issues, that are excused and paved over, as people long for it to return to its former glory.
Smell PVC was selected for the Lift Off Global Film festival 2022 and the Berlin Indie Film Festival 2022.
